Elevation Gain vs Flat Calculator

Convert a trail run with elevation gain into an equivalent flat effort distance. It is a simple estimate that helps you compare routes, anticipate training load, and understand pace in the mountains.

What is elevation gain?

Elevation gain means cumulative positive elevation: every climb added together across your route. If you climb 100 m, then 250 m, then 150 m, the run has 500 m of elevation gain. In trail running, this matters because every meter uphill asks you to work against gravity, produce more power, and load your calves, quads, and cardiovascular system.

Why is it different from flat running?

On flat ground, effort mostly depends on speed, running economy, and aerobic fitness. Uphill, at the same pace, energy cost rises sharply: heart rate climbs, stride shortens, and relative power increases. Downhill is not free either: your quads brake the body with eccentric contractions, especially on technical terrain.

Coach rule

For a quick estimate, runners often use: 100 m of elevation gain is roughly equivalent to 1 km on flat ground. It is not a perfect scientific law, but it is a very useful field rule for km-effort.

Example: 20 km with 1000 m of elevation gain gives about 30 km-effort, because 1000 m of climbing adds 10 km of flat equivalent.

Always adjust for terrain: mud, altitude, technical trails, heat, fatigue, and long descents can strongly change perceived effort.
